Jozi United is unveiled

The City of Johannesburg is pulling out all stops to ensure the resounding success of the 2010 World Cup by mobilising residents to support the event.

The City of Johannesburg is pulling out all stops to ensure the resounding success of the 2010 World Cup by mobilising residents to support the event.

The city unveiled a unique campaign in Nasrec on Saturday known as Joburg United, which they said was aimed at uniting residents.

They are using it to see Jozi being branded the world's best fan city when 32 countries battle it out in the quadrennial tournament.

In terms of the campaign, the plan is to mobilise one million soccer fans to sign up as Joburg United card-carrying members to support the World Cup.

"The concept is really simple. We aim to enrol at least one million soccer fans as card-carrying members of Joburg United," said councillor Nandi Mayathula-Khoza.

Mayathula-Khoza is a member of the city's mayoral committee for community development, who are working closely with the office of the 2010 World Cup.

"We have to unite the city and all its residents in a strong partnership to ensure that we deliver the best World Cup ever," Mayathula-Khoza said.

"The programme will be focused on ensuring the involvement of residents in the delivery elements of the World Cup. The membership (of Joburg United) will symbolise a commitment by our residents to making Joburg the best 2010 World Cup fan city."
