Satellite technology will be playing a big part in bringing communication to remote areas as the technology gets cheaper and more powerful.

Intelsat, one of the world's biggest satellite operators, is making inroads in Africa to bring cellular coverage and satellite television to areas where physical infrastructure is unable to reach at a reasonable cost.

IntelSat was one of the main sponsors of the SatCom Africa 2008 conference which ends today at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Flavian Bachabi, vice president of Intelsat Africa, said: "We have been providing satellite services for 40 years, and advances in the technology are making the satellites smaller and more powerful."

The company provides capacity to 200 clients, including Multichoice, Vodacom, Internet Solutions and national signal distributor Sentech.
