A revolution looms in boxing, with promoters being up in arms over Boxing SA's unexpected increase in the renewal of all licensees' fees.
The chairman of the Gauteng Promoters Association, Korda Manqina, has called on all licensees of Boxing SA to a meeting which he said would be held at Boxing SA's offices at Nasrec in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Manqina said the meeting would start at 10am.
He said they were vehemently opposed to the unilateral renewal of licensees' fees.
Boxing SA chairman Loyiso Mtya is alleged to have sent a circular notifying licensees about the increased fees for renewals.
"At the Bloemfontein convention, the unilateral increase of renewal fees which was recommended by the chief executive officer was successfully opposed and rejected as unrealistic madness," Manqina said.
"The deposits of R70000, R30000 and R10000 by different categories of promoters into Boxing SA's bank account was not even proposed at the convention.
"Now Loyiso Mtya is giving an unfair and unrealistic unilateral directive in his brief. We reject this dictatorial practice of increasing licence fees without consultation with the contempt it deserves.
"The Gauteng Promoters Association will not take this lying down," he warned.
Manqina's colleague, Mzimase Mnguni, the chairman of the National Promoters Association, said Boxing SA was undermining them.
"We are men, yet BSA treats us like young kids," Mnguni said. "If they do not have sponsors, they must go out and look for them and not try to make money by using us."
Jeff Ellis, of Dingaan Thobela/Knockout Boxing Promotions, said: "They (BSA) do not know what they are doing yet they make as if they know. They threatened me over the phone last Thursday that they would not pay boxers who fought in our tournament at Emperors Palace on Wednesday if we did not pay R10000.
"We did not pay it and they paid boxers because we had deposited their purse monies a long time before our tournament," said Ellis.
Branco Milenkovic, who falls into the R70000 bracket, said he was told it was a deposit and not an increase of licensee fees.
Mike Dube was the only promoter who supported Boxing SA's idea. However, he is unhappy about the manner in which it was introduced.
"I don't think BSA has legislative powers to introduce new regulations. There are few things that still need to be discussed.
"BSA should exercise their minds in deciding the fees, not just to haphazardly come up with R10000 for a development promoter when the costs to do that run above R40000."
Bongani Khumalo, BSA's chief executive officer, confirmed that there was a fee that is required to be paid.
