Baloyi, Fana gear for showdown

Mzonke Fana and Cassius Baloyi yesterday displayed professionalism and seriousness about their fight on Saturday by being within the required weight limit three days before their clash.

Their eagerly awaited shootout takes place at the University Sports Complex in Mafikeng, North West, and already these battle-scarred warriors are within the 61,91kg limit.

The official weigh-in is on Friday.

Fana, whose pre-fight medical was done back home in Cape Town, registered 60kg, while Baloyi tipped the scale at 61,60kg at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

Opponents in any title fight must be five percent above the limit. Some have failed to make use of this generosity from the authorities and that is where dedicated fighters are separated from pretenders.

Most fighters have had endless battles with the scales, resulting in 11-hour hazardous attempts to shed those extra kilograms.

Failure to do so would see some go ahead with their fights but in the process forfeit 10 percent of their purse monies.

That was the worst enemy Dingaan "The Rose of Soweto" Thobela had to face before the actual enemy inside the ring.

He could not control his ballooning weight.

Shedding off kilograms a day before the fight demotivates fighters. It leaves them dry, and subsequently takes away the sting.

Thobela and Brian Mitchell ruled the junior light division with iron fists during their heydays. But now it's Fana's turn.

He is the only local fighter who holds one of the three world recognised titles - the IBF.
