A day after a man hacked his wife and three children to death on Saturday, a patron was shot dead and three injured after an argument during a village drinking binge.

Police said the gunman found the four men chatting at their house and started arguing with them.

"The argument came to a head resulting in the gunman producing a firearm and using it.

"The man fired shots twice in the air and chased the group before shooting one of them in the head and body killing him instantly," Inspector Seth Magadzi of the Ritavi police said.

Police identified the gunman as Oupa "Madala" Mathebula, 24, and the deceased as Tebogo Nkgapelo, 27.

The other two men who were shot were identified as Courage Hlokwe, 23, Percy Letsoalo, 35, and the four-year-old as Grace Hlokwe.

The victims and the gunmen are all residents of Wisani village in the Mohlaba-Cross village near Lenyenye.

An eye-witness, Anikie Malatji, said the sound of gunfire woke her up at about 7.30 on Saturday night.

"When I went outside I was confronted by a body of a man lying in a pool of blood in my yard near the gate.

Three of them were limping trying to run away but they were helped by the community which also came to the scene after hearing gunshots," Malatji said yesterday.

An angry mob of residents stormed Mathebula's house, pelted it with stones and smashed windows.

Mathebula's mother, whose name could not be released, was allegedly assaulted by the community after she could not reveal the whereabouts of her son.

Police were called to the house and dispersed the incensed crowd.

The mother was rushed to hospital were she is recuperating from wounds on her face and body.

Meanwhile, a Limpopo man hacked his wife and three children to death with a spade before handing himself over to the police on Saturday.

The man, Mishack Kharivhe, 35, a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in Maunavhathu near Thohoyandou, hacked to death his wife, Winnie, 38, daughter, Zonaka, 7, son Thendo, 3, and his nine-month-old baby, Mabuvha.

He has not appeared in court yet. Anyone with information about Mathebula's whereabouts can contact Inspector Rackson Maholobela on 073-2363-623 or Inspector Seth Magadzi on 082-496-5190.
