The Human Rights Commission has recommended that the Forum of Black Journalists (FBJ) revisit and amend its membership policies because its current blanket exclusion of white journalists was unjustified.
The commission was expected to make this ruling today in a complaint lodged by Katy Katopodis, pictured, news editor of Talk Radio 702, and 94.7 Highveld Stereo against the FBJ.
Katopodis' complaint relates to an inaugural imbizo of the FBJ, at which ANC president Jacob Zuma was the guest speaker.
The event was the relaunch of the FBJ and an opportunity for black journalists to engage with Zuma.
The invitation was circulated among black journalists and whites who attended were asked to leave before the meeting started.
Katopodis argued that the issue did not centre on the right to form an organisation of black journalists but rather on the exclusion of white journalists.
The FBJ said that such exclusion was not inconsistent with the Constitution.
Acting FBJ chairman Abbey Makoe said: "The FBJ is a platform for black journalists to enter the market place of ideas on an equal footing."
