Top South African runner Hendrick Ramaala has completed his training and is ready for the London Marathon in England on April 13.

"I finished the serious training in Johannesburg at the weekend. So far so good for the London Marathon," said the 35-year-old law graduate yesterday.

For now, Ramaala is doing light training to maintain shape, though he is cautious about injuries in the build-up to the popular marathon.

Ramaala started training with long runs with ultra-runners at the beginning of the year preparing for the Two Oceans Marathon.

"We have a group of about 20 runners training with me at Zoo Lake for long runs and at the University of the Witwatersrand athletics stadium doing track," he said.

"I must say the training went very well this time round, I did a lot of speed training also.

"It gives me hope to challenge the big guns such as defending champion Martin Lel, Goumri Abderrahim and Felix Limo, who have been doing well.

"Lel was in devastating form when he won the marathon last year, beating all of us with his speed towards the finish line.

"On the road, I'm happy that I completed two 10km road races and one track (10000 event). I did them under 29 minutes.

"I'm ready to do well, I'm going all out to challenge for the number one spot this time round," said Ramaala.

He plans to improve on his third place finish in marathons during the past two years.

Ramaala leaves for London on Wednesday.
