The Mogale City municipality will build more than 9000 houses in the next three years to curb the problem of informal settlements and homelessness in the area.

This is a promise made by the city mayor Keketso Seerane in a state-of-the-city address on Friday.

"Through the Kagiso-Azaadville Development Project we will deliver 9350 units," Seerane said.

"The project will continue for the next three financial years. We are aiming to construct no less than 1000 houses by December this year."

This comes only a month after a workshop aimed at educating the city's residents about housing issues turned into a war of words between residents, municipal officials and representatives from the Gauteng housing department at the Lusaka Community Hall.

During the workshop residents reportedly demanded solutions to the waiting lists, corrupt officials, people who jump the waiting list queue and the issuing of title deeds.

Seerane assured residents that the municipality is planning to move away from the controversial waiting list system.
