A tribal meeting is the last hope for a solution to the impasse between a Mpumalanga chief and a poor local school over who should get MTN's monthly site rental.
MTN will set up a meeting to look at ways to resolve the tug-of-war between Mpumalanga's Kgosi Tlhame Tlhame Moepi and the Dikgabo Combined School over its R24000 a year donation.
Earlier this year MTN approached Dikgabo's principal to set up its aerial for R2000 a month. But Moepi demanded that the money be given to the tribal authority trust fund, since it was on his land.
MTN management have since reneged on its initial intention to give the money to the school. It says a scenario such as this fall within the ambit of the Interim Protection of Informal Land Rights Act, Act 31 of 1996 on which the Department of Land Affairs have clear guidelines.
MTN spokesman Ntombi Mhangwani said only one step of the process had been completed and that the furore was premature. School principal, William Kgarabyae said MTN needed a letter of approval from the chief.
"MTN cannot confirm the final position on the matter. We will hold a community meeting and take it from there," Mhangwani said.
