Basketball team in journey to Beijing

The journey to the Beijing Paralympics for the Sasol-sponsored South Africa Wheelchair Basketball team starts in Blanckenberge, Belgium today.

The national team begin a three-day quadrangular tournament with a Test against Switzerland. They meet hosts Belgium tomorrow morning and in the evening clash with France.

The final will take place on Sunday. In a statement yesterday, coach Viv Sierra, described Belgium and France as having a good pedigree on the international stage.

"Although both haven't qualified for this year's Paralympics, they did so many times in the past. The Swiss are very much an unknown quantity," he added.

Top South African stars such as Richard Nortje, Marius Papenfus and Nick Taylor will be in action in this tournament which will provide vital preparation ahead of the September 6-17 Paralympic Games in China.

Today: South Africa v Switzerland; Belgium v France

Tomorrow: South Africa v Belgium; France v Switzerland; South Africa v France; Belgium v Switzerland

Sunday: Final: 1 v 2

Third/Fourth Playoff: 3 v 4
