A man died and a police car was damaged after a violent clash between police and a mob at Ga-Mokgwathi in Bolobedu, Limpopo, yesterday.
Police spokesman Freddy Maenetja said the victim was identified as 24-year-old Lucky Mukeri.
Mukeri was fatally injured when police fired shots to scare a mob which was attacking them with an assortment of weapons.
"A scuffle began after the police arrested Patrick Madoda, 35, for alleged murder, rape, and two counts of housebreaking and theft.
"Madoda allegedly committed the crimes in 2005 and had been running from police since then," said Maenetja.
Police were conducting operation "Funeka" for their most-wanted suspects when Madoda was spotted walking in the street and they followed him
He hid at a house when he realised that he was being followed.
Police went to the house in search of him, but they were greeted with a hail of stones from family and community members who did not want the police to arrest him.
The angry community threw stones and others used beer bottles to scare police from arresting the suspect away.
Police then opened fire into the angry crowd.
Mukeri was shot during the shooting and was taken to Letaba Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.
The incident happened barely a week after police shot and killed Tshepo Ramoshaba, 18, a passenger in a car suspected of carrying criminals.
Nineteen bullets were fired at the car which was involved in a high-speed car chase with police in Polokwane.
He was shot several times in the body and in the head and died on the scene.
His brother, Piet was shot in the leg and arm and was taken to Polokwane Hospital where he is recovering.
The same police were accused of shooting dead another Limpopo youth, Jim Matlakala, for allegedly stealing two bottles of beer.
He was shot in the back of the head while running from the police who claimed that it was done in self defence.
