Security at schools questioned

In an important case that could affect all schools in South Africa, Dirk Senekal has taken the Gauteng department of education to the labour court.

In an important case that could affect all schools in South Africa, Dirk Senekal has taken the Gauteng department of education to the labour court.

Senekal says the policy for safety and security exists on paper but in practice too little is seen.

Schools have to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and school governing bodies are also responsible for security.

Has the department of education conducted an audit to determine the degree of compliance? Do district officials use a check list and have in situ inspections to determine the degree of security for pupils and staff in schools? Are budgets, equipment and safetysecurity officers adequate?

The Democratic Alliance has for many years called for better budgets and attention to safety and security in schools.

One hopes the case will give departments of education a wake-up call and force them to have better compliance to the OHSA, better training and better resources for schools.

David Quail, DA spokesman on education in Gauteng
