Traffic officer-turned choirmaster Seun Nkosi is again leading a choral group, this time in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
The traffic officer who juggles between dishing out traffic fines and conducting Seun and Bahlomphegi Choir, is taking to the stage on Sunday. He and the 65-member choir will share the stage with other choirs at Phiri Hall, Soweto. The concert starts at 1pm.
The choirmaster joined his new choir last year as its president. Previously he led the Diepkloof-based famous choir, Seun and The Rock. This was until 2002 when his employers transferred him to Pretoria where he is an inspector within the community safety department, which houses the traffic department.
The relationship between the traffic officer and his new choir, however, dates back to 1996 when Nkosi co-produced the choir's first album Baba Wethu.
"They asked me last year to join them as president of the choir, a role I accepted enthusiastically, hence the choir is now called Seun and the Bahlomphegi," said Nkosi.
"All along I have been singing as a soloist at functions of my employers, and I am really thankful to the head of my department, Margaret Diedericks for affording me this opportunity."
Fellow choristers Mandla Sibanyoni and Lucky Mbokai added that the choir felt honoured to have somebody with so much passion for choral music like Nkosi.
Seun and Bahlomphegi Choir will release their third album, Ke Fihlile, next month, a follow-up to their second album E-Mamelodi which was released in 2001.
"We struggled with our previous CD in terms of marketing. But now we have sealed a distribution deal with a major company, House Therapy, which will make sure that all our CDs are available at leading CD shops throughout the major centres of the country.
"We are actually happy because we used to struggle with distribution," said Nkosi.
