I am humbled, overjoyed and excited to be a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Maths, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Award as the 2007 winner in the general education and training band.

Through these awards, the nation-building project and teacher development programme, we are honouring all those gallant, hard-working teachers who have qualified as nominees and provincial finalists.

In these nominees and finalists, the people - including pupils, parents, teachers and principals in public schools - have seen never-say-die individuals who brave all odds to achieve miracles in their classrooms, which are often poorly equipped.

To the nominees, I would like to say: "You are among the most loyal and outstanding servants of our liberation struggle against ignorance and illiteracy in the fields of maths, physical science and technology."

Through this prestigious award we are also honouring the pioneering spirit and revolutionary leadership of the late former Sowetan editor-in-chief, Aggrey Klaaste. He was the newspaper's founding father of the nation-building concept, philosophy and work, which is currently being articulated and implemented through several other illustrious youth and community development activities, projects and programmes.

You are helping to dispel the myth that maths, science, engineering and technology are difficult subjects. You are helping this nation not to submit, but to fight to make South Africa a winning nation - against all odds. We are proud of you all. - The author is a star technical subjects teacher at Mmabatho in Mafikeng, North West. She was addressing the North West leg of the Aggrey Klaaste Maths, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Award. It is a nation-building partnership project of the Telkom Foundation, Sowetan and the Department of Education.
