The department of safety and liaison in the Eastern Cape plans to organise a 2010 World Cup workshop soon to assess their readiness for the event.

The department has already developed a draft 2010 provincial safety and security plan following a summit which took place last year.

Thobile Mhlahlo, Eastern Cape MEC for safety and liaison, said Fifa had instructed other provinces to hold similar summits to prepare for the World Cup.

"We will take part in the Provincial Coordinating Committee responsible for the overall coordination of 2010 in the Eastern Cape."

Mhlahlo said they will upgrade the Ugie, Elliot, Sterkspruit, Debe Nek, Mdantsane, Lusikisiki, Kei Bridge, Bedford, Grahamstown, Dutywa and Sterkstroom police stations.

"This year 2 445 members were trained in crime prevention, detective work, criminal record centre and technical training."
