History will be made at Emperors Palace on April 2 when sponsors and friends of a local boxer pay purse money for his foreign opponent.
Under normal circumstances promoters pay purse monies, but in this case promoters Dingaan Thobela, Allan Young, Philip Silver and Jeff Ellis could not raise the R80 000 that was demanded by Brazilian Osmar Texeira to fight Anthony van Niekerk.
That was because the four promoters, who operate under the flag of Dingaan Thobela - Knockout Boxing Promotions (DTKBP), will not be getting any broadcasting rights. Their tournament - a box-and-dine -- will not be broadcast by any television station.
Sponsor Green House Timbers and friends of Anthony van Niekerk, who want their man to challenge Daniel Bruwer for the national light heavyweight belt, rescued the situation by rasing the substantial amount of money.
Van Niekerk's next fight is against Bruwer and the date has already been set for May 31.
Van Niekerk's eight-rounder with Texeira is basically a warm-up fight for the local boxer who is therefore in a must-win situation against the hard hitting foreigner, who boasts a scary knock out ratio of 29 from 38 wins with 20 defeats.
Their fight is over eight rounds and is being promoted jointly by DTKBP and Golden Gloves Promotions.
Van Niekerk, 34, the former national middleweight holder who lost it under controversial circumstances to Mpush Makambi in 2003, has 19 wins (11 KOs), five defeats and two draws.
Van Niekerk, who made a come- back last year after being on a three-year fed-up leave since losing to Makambi, has chalked up three straight wins under new trainer Michael Schultz.
Meanwhile, KO specialist, Khotso Motau (11 KOs from 12 wins and a defeat) will fight crafty Zimbabwean Farayi Musiyiaa.
The latter is an artful fighter, who caused a shiver here last September in his drawn eight rounder with Rupert van Aswegen. He has 17 wins (10 KOs), nine defeats and a draw.
Musiyiaa's trainer Stephen Castle will make his professional debut as a fighter against Bull Muravha while Tyrone Churchill will fight Mongezi Ndzamela.
These two bouts will be contested in the heavyweight division over four rounds. This tournament has been named "Double Trouble" and it features young fighters like Lee Dyer, Jared Lovett and Graham Deidricks.
Ticket are sold at R250.
