Mazwai heads varsity centre

Former Mafube Publishing chief executive Thami Mazwai, has been appointed director of the Johannesburg University's centre for small and medium enterprise development.

Former Mafube Publishing chief executive Thami Mazwai, has been appointed director of the Johannesburg University's centre for small and medium enterprise development.

"Mazwai was appointed recently," said university spokesman Sonia Cronje.

The centre is located on the Soweto campus of the university, formerly Vista.

The centre is a R400million initiative that will offer academic programmes such as MBA degrees; an institute of African leadership for political and community leaders; and a programme to develop vibrant small businesses.

Mazwai said the centre hoped to help power the creation of a distinct and robust Soweto economy that would be a flagship in the transformation of the country's previous dormitories of labour into viable economic entities.

"Soweto currently spends R10,5billion a year and only 10percent of this in Soweto.

"Our challenge is to partner with Soweto businesses and policy-makers to increase this 10percent. Just imagine the multiplier effect," he said.

Mazwai, a former journalist, is a convenor of the National Small Business Advisory Council chaired by Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa. - Sapa
