Morgan Cushe, Eastern Cape's rugby legend, has praised top businessman Butityi Konki for going back to his roots in Port Elizabeth to help develop the sport.
Konki has pumped in R300 000 through his BK Investment Holdings to finance the Butityi Konki Schools Rugby Tournament in Uitenhage.
From April 25 to May 15 the tournament will be run by the Uitenhage Schools Rugby Development Committee.
It will feature more than 140 youngsters from Uitenhage and surrounding areas.
"This is a noble idea by a son of the soil, Butityi, to start and finance a tournament aimed at developing rugby in Uitenhage," said Cushe.
Cushe is at present employed as a development officer of the Eastern Province Rugby Union, with focus on the various townships and villages in the area. He is also a former member of a black Amabhokobhoko squad, having first represented South Africa against England in 1972.
"It is good to see people going back to their roots to plough back to the community, especially those who are doing well in business like Butityi," said Cushe.
"There is no doubt that the financial contribution brought in will inspire many youngsters to play the sport with determination.
"We want to see some of the products playing for the Eastern Province squad and also Amabhakobhoko within the next three to five years."
