A 52-year-old Limpopo man was assaulted after he was found half- naked at the veranda of a house in Makhushane village near Phalabo-rwa on Wednesday.
The man was rescued by police from angry community members who were baying for his blood.
Young and old people braved the cold weather on Wednesday night to go and see the man, who was caught after midnight in another man's house clad only in underpants.
The man, whose name is known to Sowetan, was found sitting next to the door of the house holding packets and bottles filled with oily substances.
The tongue-tied man could not utter a word when asked what he was doing in another man's yard at night - half-naked.
Spokesman for the community, Mandla Ngwenya, said the man only started talking after some members of the community started beating him up. He said he was "looking for a loaf of brown bread that is not sliced so that he could get back home".
"The man said he was sent by two women who had woken him up to go and perform rituals at the house."
But, the man could not finish relating his story to the baffled community.
"Some incensed community members begun throwing stones at him while others used their bare hands to beat him up," said Ngwenya.
"He was only rescued by the police who took him to Maphutha Malatji Hospital in Namakgale, where he is said to be recuperating from facial and body wounds."
Police spokesman in Namakgale, Lucy Sekgotodi, said a case of assault has not yet been opened at the station.
Sekgotodi said if a case is opened, the suspects would be arrested.
