Mpumalanga health MEC William Lubisi yesterday vowed to do everything in his power to retain internship students and community service doctors when they complete their studies.

Lubisi said this in Loskop, where he welcomed 437 internship students and community service doctors to the province.

"After completion of their internship, many of these students are free to join any province of their choice, and this year the department will absorb almost all these students at any cost," he said.

"We cannot continue to lose those health professionals that are willing to stay in our province, " he said.

He said the students would stay for a year, except for doctors, who in terms of the new curriculum will do a two-year internship working in a various health facilities in the province.

"The department has been on record, alluding to the acute shortage of health professionals in the province, and the potential effects of this to service delivery."
