Obesity, coupled with its opposite of early nutritional deprivation and stunting in South African children, are serious factors that contribute to their poor health, Craig Nossel of Discovery said yesterday.

Nossel was commenting on the Health Ministry's report, "Every Death Counts", published this week.

The Health Ministry report said malnutrition in children was one of the big five killers of children, alongside HIV and Aids, newborn illnesses, childhood illnesses, pregnancy and childbirth complications.

According to Discovery more than 30percent of adolescent girls and nearly 10percent of boys in South Africa are overweight.
