Moffat Park serial killer Richman Makhwenkwe, 30, was yesterday found guilty and sentenced to five life terms for murder.

He was sentenced in the Johannesburg high court to a further 30 years for rape and six months for theft.

He was convicted of murdering five people, including his girlfriend, and of raping three of his other victims. He committed the crimes between 2004 and 2005.

Judge Geraldine Bouchers said all five murders and four rapes were intentional and premeditated.

"You even brought a spade with you when you went to Moffat Park to kill your victims, meaning you knew you had to bury them afterwards," Bouchers said.

After the guilty verdict the visibly upset Makhwenkwe turned to reporters who filled the courtroom and said: "I'm going to appeal, I won't go to jail for something I did not do."

Makhwenkwe was found guilty of five charges of murder, four of rape and and two of theft.

The charges emanated from Makhwenkwe's having robbed, raped and killed people, including his girlfriend Zoleka Kula and a schoolgirl, Venessa Thandi Sibiya.
