A Mpumalanga policeman is still a free man despite information that he was one of four men who allegedly beat a man to death.

The man was assaulted for allegedly stabbing the policeman's father during an argument on Sunday.

The constable, who is attached to Embalenhle police station in Secunda, allegedly attacked the victim with the help of three friends.

The four accused the victim of stabbing the cop's father and allegedly loaded him in a car with the intention of having him locked up at the police station.

Police said the victim, who is a neighbour of the policeman's father, allegedly had a heated argument with the cop's father and eventually stabbed him with a knife.

He was injured and had to receive medical attention before he was discharged.

When the cop heard about the attack on his father he allegedly invited three friends to help him beat up the man for what he had done to his father.

"The victim was allegedly severely assaulted and sustained a fracture of the skull," Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said yesterday.

"He died on the way to the police station."

Asked why the policeman and his friends were still free four days after the incident, Khoabane said the police were still collecting statements from witnesses.

"We are still collecting statements from witnesses and our investigations are at an advanced stage," Khoabane said.

The dead man was identified as France Moomana.
