Teacher in a pickle

The New Vision Party (NVP) in Limpopo has called for drastic action against a teacher who allegedly issued false reports to two pupils for a fee.

The incident happened at Marobathota High School.

The pupils had allegedly both failed grade 9 and the teacher advised them to seek admission to grade 12 at other schools in the province.

The teacher has been identified as Joseph Magolego.

It is alleged the pupils paid him R700 for the false reports - one forking out R600 and the other R100.

The pupils have been identified as Mahlatse Mabote and Fortune Mosena and they are said to be cousins.

The plan allegedly backfired when the pupils were refused admission to other schools. They had no option but to return to their rightful grades at Marobathota.

NVP president Ike Kekana yesterday said that he had written a letter to both the school principal and the Mankweng circuit to demand that action be taken against Magolego.

"Of grave concern is that Magolego has told the school's governing body that he had not acted alone," Kekana said.

" We view this matter in a very serious light. We want answers as to why the matter has not been investigated and we want punitive measures taken against those responsible."

Magolego yesterday expressed shock about the matter having reached the media. He said it was too early for him to comment. He referred this reporter to the department of education.

Departmental spokesman Ndo Mangala said they had received a report about the matter and that it was for their labour relations unit to initiate a process to deal with any allegedly guilty party.

Marobathota is one of the most respected schools in the province and has been producing excellent matric results for years.

Though it is a public school, it is owned by the Zion Christian Church and is situated next to the church's headquarters in Moria outside Polokwane.
