The community of Umlazi township's V-section, outside Durban, is living in fear of criminal elements in their midst.
The community is shocked at the senseless killing on Sunday of the principal of Zwelihle High School, Thamsanqa Ngcobo, 58, who who was stabbed to death only metres away from his home, as he was returning from the nearby shops.
Walking to the V-section shops after 6pm has become extremely dangerous because robbers lie in wait to mug people.
Ngcobo had multiple stab wounds. There were pieces of chicken and chips scattered all over the road.
Her mother, Irene Ngcobo, arrived at the scene of the murder to find her son was already dead.
Police suspect that robbery was the motive for the killing.
It is alleged that the robbers took whatever money they could find in Ngcobo's pockets.
Recently, a teacher was also stabbed and killed at the same spot where Ngcobo died.
In that instance the motive also appeared to have been robbery.
People said they know who the culprits are but are afraid that if they talk they will become the next victims.
"We the people of this community are the ones who are allowing the situation to continue by keeping quiet and saying 'as long as I am not a victim'," said a resident who, however, wished to rename anonymous.
Police spokesman Khephu Ndlovu said that the police needed the help of the community to bring the criminals to book.
"These criminals are our children and our neighbours and we as the police cannot succeed in protecting the community that does not protect themselves and give us information about criminals," said Ndlovu.
Irene Ngcobo said: "As long as people keep quiet and give refuge to these criminals in our homes, crime will continue."
She said she was shocked at what had happened to her son and that the family is counting on the police to speed up their investigation and bring the people who killed her son to book.
Ndlovu said that the police are investigating a case of murder.
