The Soweto Netball Development League is excited that plans to revive the sport in the township are beginning to take shape.

Mantho Motshoari, one of the people who are spearheading the project to revive netball in Soweto, said: "There is light at the end of the tunnel.

"We are seeing tremendous interest among Sowetans since we announced the formation of the development league.

"As you are aware, we have been engaging in friendly games and we are seeing more and more clubs coming to join us every Sunday.

"We have three clubs - Chelsea Netball Club, LRD Orlando and Orlando Netball Club - who are now part of our new structure.

"There was also a team from Mzimhlophe who were observers, but they indicated that the entire team will be coming to play in our development league.

"We have about 20 clubs now with the majority of them playing in the Under-13s, Under-15s and Under-19s.

"We are working hard to recruit more clubs to play in the seniors, masters and men's sections. The plan is to see everyone taking part in our activities," said Motshoari.

Also working with Motshoari in reviving netball is Minkie Magooe, president of the South African Police Services Netball Union.

"We thought it would be advisable for our clubs to play netball regularly before thinking about affiliating to relevant provincial structures," said Motshoari.
