After qualifying for the Beijing Olympics in August, steeplechaser Ruben Ramolefi plans to improve his technique to make himself a better athlete.
Speaking after winning the Yellow Pages Series 3 000m steeple chase event in Pretoria on Friday night, Ramolefi said he was training hard to be in the final in Beijing.
A final year Bachelor of Arts law student at the University of Johannesburg, Ramolefi won the event in a time of 08m: 42.21 seconds.
Tshamano Setone was second in 08:48.69 with Emmanuel Mkhabela and Thuso Phaswana third and fourth in 09:07.08 and 09:29.43, respectively.
"It was a tough race but I'm happy with my performance," said Ramolefi, who won bronze at the 2005 World Student Games in Turkey in the same event.
"I have been working hard at training to become a better athlete. The African Senior Championships in Ethiopia in May will also form part of my preparations for Beijing."
Ramolefi is heading for Stellenbosch for the South African Senior Track and Field Championships this weekend, starting on Friday.
The two-day long Stellenbosch championships will be a final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the Olympics on home soil.
In Friday's series, Ofentse Mogawane won the 400m event in 46mins:15secs, followed by Zimbabwean Talkmore Nyongani in 46.18.
As expected, former South African champion Tebogo Masehla won the women's 3 000m steeple chase event in 10:26.24, with Myrette Filmalter second in 10:27.76.
Werner Botha easily won the men's 800m in 1:46.91. Second was Onalenna Baloyi in 1:47.12 and Samson Ngoepe third in 1:47.46.
The men's 800m B race was won by Solomon Serameng who clocked 1:48.15.
Tsholofelo Thipe easily won the women's 100m in 11.57, with Hannes Dreyer scooping the men's title in 10.46.
