Mama Angel has come to the rescue of many organisations that had been experiencing temporary cash flow problems to run their project.

Mama Angel is part of the corporate social responsibility arm of Sowetan's Nation Building project, is a response to the social needs of communities where Sowetan has a footprint.

Mama Angel has helped home-care and old-age projects, luncheon clubs and community sports clubs.

It has responded to pleas from church groups who have set up food and soup kitchens to feed the unemployed and has established a working relationship with orphans and children's homes, providing them with food, books, school uniforms, blankets and curtains.

In exceptional cases, Mama Angel responds to requests from individuals for temporary help. Sowetan has in extreme cases housed the destitute and provided funds for the indigent.

"We try to do our bit to help the needy and the poor. We are committed to contributing positively to the lives of our readers and want to put the smile back on the faces of the young and old," said Lindi Obose, project coordinator.

"We are there to assist in any way we can at grassroots level in keeping with the philosophy of Aggrey Klaaste's Nation Building.

"We welcome requests from youth organisations. That include developmental sports clubs, self-help organisations, community projects that set up libraries, child or granny-headed households," Obose said.

The project has worked with people in Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga.

Using the extensive database of the Nation Building project, Mama has engaged the social services where people were unable to apply for IDs and social grants.

Mama Angel, unfortunately, does not subsidise any project that has a commercial basec such as nursery schools or private child minders. Sowetan also does not offer start-up funds for small businesses. Those are catered for by Sowetan Nation Building project.
