South Africa's aspiring leaders have begun voicing their opinions, solutions, alternatives and concerns about issues affecting families, communities and the nation through the yearly Young Communicators Awards.

This Anglo American and Sowetan nation-building projectseeks to nurture assertive, confident, competitive and career-driven youngsters in grades 11 and 12 by helping to improve their public speaking skills - from the research to the presentation phase; developing the participating pupils' leadership qualities and raising the standard of their written and spoken English.

All nine provincial education departments are key organising partners of the Young Communicators Awards. Senior provincial education department officials serve as pivotal provincial project coordinators.

This programme encourages a pioneering spirit among South Africa's youth, and instils a nation-building spirit in competitors.

In the first provincial heat, held at Anglo American in Johannesburg at the weekend, Rorisang Thandekiso of Riverside High School pipped Thamsanqa Reibushe of Johannesburg Secondary School and Lerato Malokoane of Springs Girls' High School.

Rorisang is due to be joined in the national finals in June by the overall winners from the eight other provincial eliminations which are due to take place at:

l Kimberley, Northern Cape on March 8;

l Worcester, Western Cape on March 15;

l Bloemfontein Free State on April 19;

l Polokwane, Limpopo on May 3;

l East London, Eastern Cape on May 10;

l Nelspruit Mpumalanga on May 17;

l Mmabatho North West on May 24;

l Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on May 31;

l And the national finals will take place in Johannesburg on June 14.
