A woman who three weeks ago abandoned her five-day-old baby son inside a public toilet at Maponya Mall in Klipspruit, Soweto, has been arrested and appeared in court.
Lindiwe Nhlanhla, 28, of Motswaledi informal settlement near Orlando Power Park, was arrested on Saturday at the Bara taxi rank in Soweto. She appeared in the Protea magistrate's court on Monday on child abandonment charges.
An informer notified police where Nhlanhla would be.
Kliptown police spokesman Felicity Radebe said Nhlanhla claimed she had no parents and that after she dumped the baby, pictured, she went to a friend's place.
After her arrest, Nhlanhla told police she was confused and frustrated after the baby's father had left her.
"She said she left the baby at the mall because his father worked there as a painter," said Radebe.
The baby was abandoned in the centre's toilets and discovered by security guards who noticed some movement in a toilet bowl through the CCTV monitors.
A female colleague was sent to take a closer look. On arrival she found the baby in a standing position inside the toilet bowl.
