A 29-year-old Putco bus driver was taken in for questioning following an accident in which four people, including three high school pupils and a minibus driver, died on Soshanguve's Umkhongolo road yesterday
The accident took place when the bus and another vehicle collided head-on.
The smaller vehicle was taking pupils to school. The accident also left 15 people injured. A third vehicle, also transporting schoolchildren, rammed into the Condor after the first collision.
The injured, three of them school children, are in a critical condition, at Dr George Mukhari hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.
Tshwane metro police spokesman, William Baloyi, said the bus collided head-on with a kombi ferrying the pupils to their respective schools in and around Soshanguve.
As this crash happened, the third vehicle, which was behind the kombi, carrying one adult passenger and several schoolchildren, hit the first vehicle from behind.
The force of the impact was so powerful that half of the first vehicle was pushed by the bus for about 200 metres from place of impact.
The schoolchildren who were killed and those critically injured were inside the vehicle.
Baloyi said they had not established how many schoolchildren in total were in the Toyota Venture and Condor.
Two adults injured in the accident were in the bus and two, including the driver, were those travelling in the Toyota Venture.
Schools affected by the accident are Central High School, Hlomphanang High, Soshanguve Technical High, Memezelo High, Wahlmansthal High, Reitumetse High, Hlanganani High and Thutong junior secondary school.
Panic-stricken parents called the police and flocked to the local hospital and government mortuary in search of their children.
Dr George Mukhari hospital spokesman, Kealeboga Mohajane, said seven victims of the accident, five pupils and two adults from the bus, were treated and discharged.
"One pupil was taken to a private hospital by the parents and four victims, three of them pupils, are in stable condition.
Three pupils are in a critical but stable condition," said Mohajane.
