Karabo Lephadi, 15, who died after an alleged attack during a school rugby match, was buried in Mafikeng, North West, at the weekend, but the mystery surrounding his death has deepened.
The principal and staff of Hoërskool Wonderfontein in Carletonville did not attend the funeral, and only two fellow black pupils were there.
The school did not even hold a memorial service for Karabo, and neither did the class teacher feature in the funeral programme.
On February 19 Karabo, a Grade 10 pupil, was allegedly hit repeatedly with a rugby ball on the stomach.
On that day, when his father, Samuel Lephadi, a Fochville magistrate, fetched him from school, he found him in a "very shocking, critical and traumatic state".
He took him to a doctor who referred him to Lenmed Clinic in Lenasia, Johannesburg, where he died two days later.
Family member Moses Lephadi told mourners that Karabo kept telling his father and the doctor who had accompanied them to Lenmed that, "I am going to be okay".
Lephadi said the past 37 days Karabo spent with his father were the most memorable.
Karabo lived with his mother, sister and brother at the family home in Mafikeng. He moved in with his father, who lives and works in Fochville, in January.
"On February 17 he told his father that something would happen but did not say what. Something was happening but we knew little about it."
Police are investigating a case of murder.
