Land claim corruption

The regional land claims commission has warned communities about bogus officials who charge applicants to lodge claims.

"The public must know that applications for claims expired on December 31 1998 and that no government official should be paid to render services," said commission (RLCC) spokesman Innocent Ncanana.

He said that the RLCC was the only legitimate body handling land claims.

A man in Postmasburg in Northern Cape was arrested and charged last week for charging applicants R50 for lodging a claim.

Willem Murphy was caught with fraudulent claim forms and money by the organised crime unit and appeared in the Postmasburg magistrate's court on Friday, Ncanana said.

"Communities must help us deal withthese unscrupulous elements," he said.
