DJ Phat Joe bounces back

Phat Joe, the former TV show host and successful Yfm DJ, has bounced back as host of Kaya FM's breakfast slot.

The DJ, who was publicly humiliated four years ago when the SABC canned his show, has bounced back by landing one of the most sought after slots on urban radio - the Kaya FM breakfast show.

The slot became vacant when Pat Cash was unceremoniously booted out last year. Phat Joe beat tough competition such as Justice "Just-Ice" Ramahlola to land this slot.

The station confirmed yesterday that it had indeed signed on Phat Joe (real name Majota Nkumbule) to host the breakfast show.

Phat Joe has been out of the limelight for a number of years. The station confirmed that the talkative DJ will start his new job on Monday. Neil Johnson, Kaya FM's programmes manager told Sowetan yesterday that Phat Joe would work with the current production team comprising Jeff, Stevie and Thando.

"Naturally, being an Afropolitan station that breathes the aspirations of a progressive city, we were not going to settle for an average Joe," says Mark Mdlela, marketing manager for the Newtown-based station.

"Phat Joe comes with a broadcasting pedigree and added comedic background second to none in South Africa.

"The production team of Jeff, Stevie and Thando are ready to hit the ground running once he arrives," said Johnson.

"I look forward to joining the Kaya FM family and playing some real music for a change.

"Joburg, be very afraid," said Phat Joe.

He is one of the pioneering DJs at Yfm. He contributed to its success by solidifying the support of the youth market behind the station.

His success there worked as a launch pad for the The Phat Joe Show on SABC1 which competed with Felicia Mabuza-Suttle's Show on e.tv.
