Sisters drown at prison

Two girls, aged 13 and 15, have drowned at the Thohoyandou prison, Limpopo police said yesterday.

Two girls, aged 13 and 15, have drowned at the Thohoyandou prison, Limpopo police said yesterday.

"The girls lived with their mother on the prison premises. The mother [a warder] went to work on Saturday at about 2pm, leaving the two young girls in the house," said police spokesman Captain Mashudu Malelo.

"They went swimming in the dam about 500m from the house and drowned," said Malelo.

The small dam was used to water the gardens, he said.

"The girls were discovered between 3pm and 4pm. Emergency services certified the girls dead on the scene," he said.
