Fun for smart minds

Victor Mecoamere

Funnyman Shonisani "Ashifashabba" Muleya is to conduct induction sessions aimed at enabling high school pupils to enjoy participating in the 2008 Smart Young Mindz Challenge.

Ashifashabba, a trained engineer, is helping to raise high school pupils' interest, participation and performance in mathematics, physical science, technology and engineering.

A DJ and comedian of note, Ashifashabba has been referred to as "the funniest man on earth". His Smart Young Mindz Challenge induction road show will take place at the following schools:

l Ahmed Timol High School in Randfontein today;

l DC Marivate High School in Soshanguve tomorrow;

l General Smuts High School in Vereeniging and at the Sebokeng Technical High School on Wednesday;

l Leshata High School in Orange Farm on Thursday;

l Eureka High School in Springs on Friday;

l Parklands High School in Alberton on next Monday, March 10;

l Kliptown Secondary School in Eldorado Park on next Tuesday, March 11;

l St Barnabas High School in Bosmont on next Wednesday, March 12;

l Cullinan High School in Cullinan on next Thursday, March 13; and

l Highlands North Secondary School on next Friday, March 14.

These sessions - which are highly informative and entertaining - will encourage pupils to work as research, analysis and implementation teams to help solve South Africa's 2010 Soccer World Cup-related marketing, tourism and communications posers by:

l Developing a slang dictionary that incorporates at least 100 words and sayings - with clear meanings as well as examples of the context in which the words and sayings are used.

These must be purely South African but can incorporate any of the indigenous languages - with the meanings in English; and

l Highlighting Gauteng's reputation as one of the most politically and culturally unique regions in the world.

For the environmental affairs phase of the challenge, the Smart Young Mindz contestants will be required to:

l Innovate alternative power sources that would help circumvent instances like the current power outages, as well as provide relief for people who cannot afford electricity, gas, batteries and solar energy.

l Provide a water recycling solution to challenges such as the prevalence of E.coli and germs.

These cause diseases such as cholera and other water-borne diseases that are caused by unclean drinking water.
