Ladysmith serial killer and rapist Vusimuzi Innocent Khumalo has been sentenced to five life terms.

The 32-year-old was convicted on four counts of murder, two counts of kidnapping, five counts of indecent assault, three counts of rape and one count of attempted rape.

Captain Charmaine Struwig said Khumalo was sentenced to an additional 53 years for 16 other criminal charges.

In one instance, Khumalo gunned down and killed Mzomusha Khanyile and his two-year-old son, Nondumiso, on the corner of Pieters Road and Umbulwane Road in Ladysmith on March 17 last year. Khumalo dragged Khanyile's wife into the nearby veld and raped her repeatedly.

"I think the community of Ladysmith can breathe easily now that Khumalo has been convicted and sentenced," Struwig said.

Local mayor, Duduzile Mazibuko, said she was ecstatic.

"We commend the judge for imposing such a stiff sentence. I hope this sends a clear message that our justice system will ensure that citizens have the right to lead a normal life."
