Two women with similar names, surnames, birthdates and the same residential address in Daantjie Trust near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, are sharing the same identity number.

Zodwa Khoza, 24, said her life had been put on hold because she shares the same ID number with a person she does not even know.

Khoza alleges that Home Affairs officials told her that someone in her area had been using the same ID as hers.

Khoza discovered the blunder two years ago after visiting the offices in Nelspruit to apply for her twin daughters' birth certificates. "They told me that I should re-apply for my ID and confiscated the one I had," said Khoza.

Khoza said that she even lost her job at Legal Wise where she was recruiting clients.

She was allegedly asked to bring her identity document for verification. And when she was was unable to produce it, she lost her job.

She said home affairs officials have been sending her from pillar to post since then.

She claims the officials turned her down when she asked to be issued with a temporary identity document.

Khoza told Sowetan that she was sick and tired of visiting the Home Affairs offices.

Home affairs spokesman Mantshele Tau was not available for comment.
