'mkwaiwa owes me'

Riot Hlatshwayo

Riot Hlatshwayo

Mpumalanga traditional musician Nothembi Mkhwebane has accused music promoter Prosper Mkwaiwa of exploitation.

Mkhwebane alleges that Mkwaiwa failed to pay her for performances at two music festivals last year.

The 56-year-old Mkhwebane says Mkwaiwa owes her R40000 following her performances on Workers' Day and during the Amakhosi festival last year.

She says Mkwaiwa promised to pay her R30000 for herperformance at a jazz festivalat Secunda on May 1 last yearand R25000 for the Amakhosi festival at KwaMnyamanenear Pretoria on March 1 last year.

Mkhwebane says Mkwaiwa paid her R15000 immediately after the KwaMnyamane festival but has failed to pay her the balance of R10000

"If he dies before paying me my R40000, God must return him to earth so that he can pay me first," she says.

"I had to pay the 14 members of my band and my driver using my children's money."

"He is actually playing big in a small town," she claimed.

But Mkwaiwa denied owing Mkhwebane a single cent. He claims Mkhwebane is suffering from amnesia [loss of memory] because she is too old for the music industry.

He says he paid her R15000 for the Amakhosi festival and that is the sum they had both agreed on.

Mkwaiwa says Mkhwebane should be thankful that she received R15000 because the Amakhosi festival was a charity event for the Ndebele chiefs.

Regarding the Secunda jazz festival, Mkwaiwa says he paid Mkhwebane R30000 as they had agreed.

Mkhwebane, however, challenges Mkwaiwa to produce proof of payment. But he told Sowetan that he did not give any artist proof of payment when he paid for services rendered.

"I paid her in cash and she knows, it for sure. I think she is suffering from amnesia and believes she can spin some cash from me because she thinks I'm her pyramid scheme," Mkwaiwa says.

Asked if she suffers from loss of memory, Mkhwebane angrily said Mkwaiwa was talking "nonsense".

"That bloody fool must not talk nonsense. It's him who suffers from forgetfulness because he even forgot that he did not pay me. I'll take him to court," promised Mkhwebane.
