Eastern Cape safety, roads and transport MEC Thobile Mhlahlo, will officially launch the Kei Rail Passenger Service in Mthatha on March 1.

The launch will mark the start of operations of trains between Mthatha and East London, a move that will ease travel for poor rural people between the two towns.

The first train will leave Mthatha for East London at 7. 30pm. The launch was given the green light by the Rail Safety Regulator when the department of roads and transport received an operating permit to run a rail passenger service between East London and Mthatha earlier this month.

"This proves that the decision we took as provincial government to revitalise this line was correct.

This project will provide a lasting solution to our public transport challenges," said Mhlahlo.

A single trip between East London and Mthatha will cost R30,00.

Tickets will be sold at the various stations two hours before the train departs.
