The woman accused of stealing a two-week-old baby at Mamelodi Hospital appeared in the Mamelodi magistrate's court yesterday.

Ouma Josephine Phiri, who was arres-ted at her home earlier this week, has been charged with kidnapping.

Dressed in a brown T-shirt and a blue skirt, Phiri hung her head in shame until she was led back to the cells.

Phiri allegedly stole Siyamthanda from his mother Phumeza Pulwana last Friday.

She returned the baby to his mother three days later after her family apparently put pressure on her.

During the proceedings the magistrate called Phiri's sister Refilwe to the stand to tell the court if her sister was in her right state of mind.

This was after state prosecutor Zachariah Matlhatji suggested Phiri be released on R1500 bail.

"I think my sister is mentally ill, that is why she gathered the courage to steal the baby," she said.

Phiri was reman-ded in custody until Wednesday for mental observation.
