Shaheed Mohammed grossly misrepresented Anglo American's role during the recent energy crisis.

We supply coal to Eskom from New Denmark, New Vaal and Kriel. These operations were unaffected during the crisis and we were able to meet our contractual obligations to Eskom.

Since the crisis began, our senior management team has been working intensively to play our part in addressing the national emergency and protecting our operations. We have offered our expertise both from within South Africa and the world. We have formed a group-wide energy task team with several working groups looking respectively at power needs present and future, supplementary generation including for emergencies, financial issues and people and communications issues.

The president in his state of the nation address spoke positively about our approach to the national emergency.

In its position as South Africa's largest mining company and both a major supplier to and customer of Eskom, we are working with Eskom, the government, NUM and the Chamber of Mines to urgently identify and implement solutions for the short and long term to guarantee the integrity of electricity supply.

Dr Pranill Ramchander, media relations manager, Anglo American South Africa
