Colleagues and the public gave popular Isidingo actress Ashley Callie a colourful memorial service befitting the life of Lee Haines, her character in the soapie yesterday.

The moving service, held at the lush Johannesburg Country Club lawns, was attended by the who's who in South African showbiz.

Her six years with the soapie were described in near-perfect terms.

Robert Whitehead, who plays the role of the evil media mogul Baker Haines, and Lee Haines's father, heaped praises on Callie for her professional outlook on the soapie.

After reading a touching poem for the late actress, Whitehead had this to say: "She was a woman of class, style, grace, and her conduct was charming, spontaneous, sensitive, tender, natural, refreshing and polished. Her untimely death is our tragedy. It is actually terrible..."

Whitehead was among the speakers who included 702 Talk Radio Kate Turkington, a family friend, Isidingo executive producer Pumla Hopa, SABC chief executive Dali Mpofu and Callie's sister and brother - Lauren and John.

Callie died last Friday at the Johannesburg Hospital after a car crash a week earlier.
