A teacher-schoolgirl sex scandal and the alleged rape of a teacher - by a teacher - have prompted the Limpopo department of education to embark on a campaign to identify and weed out the offenders.

Male teachers, according to reports, are bedding their girl pupils and sometimes even fathering children with them.

In the latest incident, a teacher at Kgakwa High School, in the Dendron area near Polokwane, was suspended this week for allegedly being romantically involved with one of his girl pupils.

Ndo Mangala, spokesman for the education department in Limpopo, confirmed the suspension.

Mangala said that if there was any truth in the matter, the teacher, who he did not name, would definitely face some punitive action.

He said the department had dispatched senior officials and circuit managers to the affected schools after learning of the alarming sexual abuse .

The latest affair, said to have started last year, came to light when the pupil's parents scolded her for not sleeping at home.

The Grade 12 pupil, whose name cannot be released, told them that she had spent the night with her teacher.

Her shocked parents reported the matter to the school principal who then immediately contacted the department.

Internal investigations into his alleged misconduct continue.

Teachers, according to Mangala, are second parents to pupils at schools.

"It is then very obvious that a parent cannot sleep with his child," Mangala said.

Meanwhile, the department has dispatched another group of inspectors to investigate allegations that a teacher attached to Pelo Ya Kgomo High School, in Sekgosese near Modjadjiskloof, had raped another teacher.

The teacher, Refilwe Sethibela, 31, allegedly raped his colleague when he was romantically involved with the woman.

Sethibela, who appeared in court this week, allegedly assaulted his 25-year old colleague before forcing himself on her.

The alleged victim woke up at Sethibela's boarding house the next day and laid charges against him with the police.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the teacher appeared in the Sekgosese magistrate's court this week, charged with rape.

He is out on R1000 bail and his next court appearance will be on April 12.
