Lamontville Golden Arrows emerged with a narrow 1-0 win over neighbours AmaZulu in a KwaZulu-Natal derby at King Zwelithini Stadium yesterday.
The only goal of this clash came in the 52nd minute when Musa Bilankulu headed home a beauty from a cross by Joseph Musonda, who participated in an interchange of passes with Kagiso Senamela from a corner kick.
The first half was boring. AmaZulu, who were the hosts, came close in the 18th minute after a defensive error, but Abia Nale's shot was blocked by Mbongeni Mzimela.
But AmaZulu piled on the pressure after the interval and looked the more likely to score. The change of approach almost paid dividends in the 47th minute, when Siyabonga Mkhwanzi came close.
Bilankulu made them pay a few minutes later.
Usuthu, as AmaZulu fans are known, could not contain their frustration after their club had conceded the goal, and they began shouting for changes.
Arrows took advantage and almost scored again, but Billy Rantsoana's free header went narrowly wide in the 63rd minute. Even the introduction of star player John "Shoes" Moshoeu for AmaZulu in the 82nd minute could not help change the scoreline.
It came as no surprise when the disgruntled Usuthu called for assistant coach Joel Faya and manager James Dlamini to be fired, after the game.
