Subaru is gearing up.
The highlights of the second-generation of its five-plus-two seater SUV include significant changes to both its six-cylinder horizontally-opposed motor and its transmission, which is now a five-speed.
In addition, the styling has been refreshed and changes to the cabin improve comfort and convenience.
With a revised frontal design incorporating a bolder grille and higher bonnet line, it now looks more conventional than before, but is no less distinctive as a result. Also new is the inclusion of roof rails and updated 18-inch wheels.
Some of the most noticeable changes are to the rear of the vehicle, and the quarter lights are a full 30percent larger than before. This has resulted in improved rearward visibility as well as an airier feeling for those in the third row.
The rear view of the new Subaru Tribeca is less elaborate than before. Careful consideration to the tail light design and the shape and size of the bumper has resulted in an effect which is considerably better integrated and more visually appealing.
The 2008 Tribeca is still powered by the acclaimed H6 Boxer engine, but it now measures 3,6 litres and produces 190kW and 350Nm.
As before, the engine is fitted with both an Active Valve Control System and Variable Valve Lift.
A host of changes have been made to the engine with three objectives: improved refinement, lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions.
The 3,6-litre version can also run on 93 octane unleaded fuel.
All the gear ratios of the E-5AT five-speed automatic transmission with its electronically-controlled centre differential have changed.
Revised hydraulic and electronic controls result in smoother and less frequent gear changes.
Thanks to an extensive array of safety features and warning systems, the Tribeca was awarded a five-star safety rating in the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme.
These include ventilated discs on all wheels, and an arsenal of electronic and hydraulic technology to help the driver maintain control in extreme situations.
