Lies spread over the Scorpions

Reviewing the criminal justice system must not compromise the fight against corruption and organised crime. President Thabo Mbeki has given the direction to reform the system without contradicting the Polokwane resolution.

Painful as it is, the Scorpions will be dissolved and a new strong unit formed. The Scorpions did outstanding work and it is a lie that it was Mbeki's private army. The lie was made up by people who were stung.

The ANC has been the principal champion against organised crime, corruption and drug trafficking. It fought corruption in the state, private and public sectors. In 2004 it won 70 percent of the vote because it reconfirmed its bold stance against organised crime and corruption.

Like the SAPS, the Scorpions are not perfect. Both are infested with corrupt people reminiscent of apartheid. The new unit must continue to investigate prominent people. Probing senior ANC members is not unconstitutional.

The ANC can't be divided by people who are against justice, rule of law and clean governance. The majority of our people, black and white, support Mbeki's efforts to defend our nation, its integrity and moral high ground.
