Workers down tools in dispute over wages

The construction of a tarred road between Lefiso and Marapyane near KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, has come to a grinding halt after workers downed tools over a pay dispute.

The workers claim that since they started working on the road more than seven months ago, they are either paid late or not at all.

They are expected to be paid on the last day of each month, but claim their bosses send them from pillar to post when they enquire about money on the due date.

The department of roads and transport yesterday acknowledged that it was aware of the dispute.

But department spokesman Joseph Mabuza said it was incorrect that there were times that workers were not paid. "They are being paid by a consultant who sometimes pays them late, but they have never been totally unpaid for any month."
