A Mpumalanga police constable who was arrested while caught red-handed selling a form to apply for a liquor licence briefly appeared in the White River magistrate's court yesterday.
Constable Freddy Matshabe, 34, was not asked to plead to 15 charges of corruption and was granted R2500 bail. The matter was postponed pending his next court appearance on March 4.
He is expected to appear in the White River regional court at his next appearance.
Matshabe ran away from members of the provincial police's organised crime unit when they told him that he was under arrest.
He was, however, caught while mingling with commuters at a local taxi rank.
He had allegedly sold the forms for R300 each to members of the community who needed to apply for liquor licences
Mpumalanga police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi said it was disturbing that certain members of the police got themselves involved in criminal activities, thereby denting the image of the whole police service.
In a separate incident, Sne Masuku reports that a police intelligence-driven operation in KwaZulu- Natal to monitor robbers paid off when they were bust near the Marianhill toll plaza in Durban yesterday.
The robbers were allegedly on their way to commit another robbery. All five men suspected of being robbers were arrested on the spot after an exchange of gunfire with the police.
Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said police had been monitoring the group very closely to even know about their next robbery destination in Pietermaritzburg.
