I read the address by Premier Sello Moloto on matters relating to youth, rural and economic development. It captured achievement and improvement in Limpopo.

The premier and his executive deserve applause for adopting austerity measures to deal with the backlog accumulated over the years, possibly because of mismanagement of funds. We hope things will be back to normal by the next financial year.

I'm concerned about the R85million spent on bursaries though. No statistics and details were provided to substantiate this huge expenditure. As much as I believe in skills development and empowerment, it can only be right to award financial assistance to poor students, not to those already employed.

It is the only way to build the future of the province and country. Out of 14029 pupils who passed matric with exemptions in 2006, how many of them benefited from this bursary scheme? But, I agree with the premier that the contribution of the private sector in this regard leaves much to be desired.

Mathematics and physics higher grade passes were impressive. I propose that we launch a project to track all those who pass maths on the higher grade. This will ensure that we do not lose potential maths teachers or engineers.
